Lovers Mitten
This is a fun gift to make and give to that special couple. It is a mitten with two cuffs that allows the "lovers" to hold hands while walking in cold weather. It is made with large needles, so it probably isn’t THAT warm. However, you could adjust the gauge to make a warmer mitten. You could also make two additional mittens from a traditional pattern for the opposite hands. It can be made in one color or with stripes in school colors.
Materials: 1 ½ ounces worsted weight yarn (original was made with Coats and Clarks Red Heart yarn), 4 #10 U.S. (6mm) double pointed needles, stitch holder, large eye sewing needle.
Gauge: 4 sts, 5 rows = 1 inch
Cuff
Cast on 28 sts and divide on 3 needles as follows: needle #1 = 12 sts, needles #2, #3 = 8 sts
Join and k2, p2 for 3 inches or desired cuff length
Next round: k
Next round: bind off 7 sts, k to end of round
Cut yarn and put these 21 sts on holder
Make a 2nd cuff, but don’t cut yarn
Joining of cuffs (this is the only tricky part)
Slip the 21 sts from the holder to the 1st needle, making sure that the bound off sts from both cuffs are side by side. There will be 26 sts on the 1st needle, 8 sts on the 2nd and 3rd needles.
Knit one row
At this point, put 14 sts on each needle
Next row: (Increase row) Increase one stitch on each needle (45 sts)
Work even in st st for 5 ½ inches or 1 ½ inches less than desired length above the cuffs
Decrease for top
Row 1: *k3, k2tog. Repeat from * around
Rows 2, 3: knit
Row 4: *k2, k2tog. Repeat from * around
Rows 5, 6: knit
Row 7: *k1, k2tog. Repeat from * around
Row 8: knit
Row 9: *k2tog. Repeat from * around
Cut yarn and draw through 9 sts. Pull tight and tie.
Sew seams between cuffs. Weave in ends
